The house of Louis Roederer, as we know it today, was officially founded in 1833, though its origins trace back to 1776. Louis Roederer himself was a visionary ambassador for the brand, expanding its reach into key export markets, most notably Russia. His efforts led to a historic partnership with Tsar Alexander II, who, in 1876, commissioned a bespoke transparent bottle to impress his guests—thus, Cristal was born. Originally made from genuine crystal and much sweeter than today’s style, it quickly became synonymous with luxury and exclusivity.
In the 1930s, after Louis Roederer’s passing, his widow Camille Olry-Roederer took the reins, securing prime vineyard holdings that remain central to the house’s identity. Unlike most large négociants, Louis Roederer sources all its vintage wines exclusively from its own Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. Many of these sites are farmed sustainably and biodynamically, with select parcels still worked by horse-drawn plows, preserving the deep connection between land and tradition.
Today, the estate thrives under the brilliance of Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, one of Champagne’s most respected winemakers. Each wine is vinified separately, village by village, in large oak or stainless steel barrels. By blocking malolactic fermentation, Lecaillon ensures that Roederer’s champagnes retain exceptional purity, vibrancy, and precision. Cristal remains one of the world’s most coveted prestige cuvées, and its Rosé is not only the most sought-after and expensive rosé in Champagne but is widely regarded as the benchmark for excellence.
