Château de la Tour was built in 1890 by Monsieur Beaudet of Beaune, whose daughter married Jean Morin of Nuit St Georges. Morin was a great athlete who appeared in both the summer and winter Olympics of 1948. His daughter married into the Labet family and now his grandson Francois Labet is responsible for both the wines of Domaine Pierre Labet in Beaune and Château de la Tour in Clos-Vougeot. Château de la Tour’s vineyards are on the upper and middle slope, which many believe should be the only area considered as Grand Cru. Labet’s holdings in Clos-Vougeot cover 5.48 hectares including a single hectare plot of ancient vines planted in 1910, the source of his superb Vieilles Vignes cuvee. In 2010, to celebrate his vines turning 100 years old, Labet produced a special cuvee from the best parcel of the vineyard named after his grandfather Jean Morin. Labet’s wines are classically structured and built to age. The vines are farmed organically, typically vinified with 100% stem inclusion, and are never fined or filtered.
