Philippe Jouan is a small family-run domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis which has remained totally under the radar. Most of their tiny three hectares of vines were historically sold to Drouhin, but more recently they have been bottling some of the wines themselves. Philippe, who started working with his father in 2004, slightly expanded the operation while staying true to his father’s traditional winemaking style. With a focus on finesse over extraction, Philippe destems the grapes but reintroduces up to 10% of the stems for vinification. The use of oak is judicious, with only 30% new oak for village wines and 70% for the Clos-Saint-Denis, ensuring it complements rather than dominates the fruit and terroir expression. These wines exhibit a light color, elegant fruit, and a satisfying, lingering finish. If you are a lover of the elegant side of old-school Burgundy, these delicious wines are for you.
